The heroine of Orléans

This is a fantastic story about the farm girl Joan of Arc. She followed heavenly guidance, led an army, and became a martyr during the Hundred Years’ War. She cried out loud when she was led to the bonfire where she would be burned alive. What had she really done wrong?

Joan was a political person who could have changed how the Hundred Years’ War ended.

Joan’s famous white banner was decorated with lilies, a flower that is normally associated with the French monarchy, which she was fighting for.

Jeanne d'Arc

The heretic

Tens of thousands of people joined the town square to see the event in Normandy. She got comfort from a Dominican priest who held a cross so high that she could see it over the flames.

Joan of Arc was only a teenager when she was murdered, dressed in white. She was called a heretic because she had a belief that was against the religion. She said she got messages from angels.

She was charged with being a  “heretic” because she dressed in men’s clothes. But the authorities had already been after her because she had embarrassed England during the Hundred Years’ War, which made people angry.

The political backdrop

When Joan of Arc was born, France and England had been at war for 75 years. The fight began over the French throne in 1337 but spread to the countryside.

The English destroyed a lot of the enemy’s harvest and caused suffering among the people. The people wanted the fight to end.

It didn’t look good for France. The country was split in two. Different sides fought against each other and it ended up with the Burgundians, who were allied with England, taking control over large areas of Northern France.

This put Joan’s small town in a difficult spot. The town was taken over by the Burgundians, but people in the town were loyal to Charles. They were punished because of this and there were several fires.

Simple background

Joan of Arc was born in around 1412. Her parents were farmers who rented land. They didn’t have much schooling, so they had just enough to get by. Her father also had a second job as a town tax collector.

Joan’s mother was very religious and she made sure that Joan knew the Catholic values. This had an impact on Joan for the rest of her life.

Joan was the daughter of a farmer and grew up in a small town where she watched over animals as a child.

Her first vision

When Joan was 12 years old, she heard voices. St. Catherine, St. Margaret, and St. Michael who spoke to her. This changed her destiny.

They told Joan, with beautiful voices, that she had been chosen to drive the English out of France. She should also make sure that Charles was crowned king in the cathedral of Reims. The cathedral was in enemy land.

Joan had seen a miracle and knew what she had to do. She didn’t know how to tell the authorities, but she got help. Dauphin Charles listened to her since the war was already a lost cause. Charles had lost his legacy and he was desperate. Joan’s sign from above could be the answer to all of his prayers.

An impossible task

It wouldn’t be easy for Joan to get in touch with Charles. He held court in Chinon, a town controlled by Burgundy.

She asked her local lord, Robert de Baudricourt, to bring her to Charles. He wouldn’t do it, but Joan didn’t give up. She asked for support from the people in the town and got it. Many believed that she was the savior. When she came to Baudricourt with all these people, she was allowed to go to Chinon.

It wasn’t easy because the king’s court was skeptical of what she had to say. To see if she was telling the truth, she had to point out the king among many people.

No one knew what the king looked like, so it seemed impossible. But Joan knew that God was guiding her and pointed at the right person. Then she was able to speak alone with him and made a huge impression on the king.

First victory

The king and his men were not sure that they trusted Joan, so they decided to test her. The city of Orléans had been attacked for months, but Joan said that she could end this. They gave Joan a white banner and a white horse.

Joan and a small group of men went to the attacked city. Thanks to the combination of Joan’s military tactics, courage, and maybe a little luck, they drove the English out of the city. The attack ended less than ten days later, on 8 May 1429.

The coronation

Everyone was amazed, including Charles. Joan was viewed as a heroine. Her next plan was to march on Reims so that Charles could be crowned there. The towns gave up without a fight and opened the gates. 14 days later, Charles was crowned with Joan and her banner next to him.

Jeanne received an audience with the king, but for her safety she had to wear men’s clothing just to arrive there.

A fallen warrior

But the success wouldn’t last for long.

After a year, Joan was fighting to protect the city of Compiègne. Her army was forced to pull back, but Joan stayed in the back to make sure that everyone got away safely. That meant that she was in danger and she was hit by an arrow. She fell off her horse and had to give up.

A valuable prisoner

The Burgundians were overjoyed over their catch. They locked Joan inside a castle tower.

She tried to escape several times, but she wouldn’t give up. One time she fell twenty meters straight down, but luckily she survived. She was captured again and taken to a more secure place. It all ended with Joan being sold to the English. She was then put in prison, which caused a fuss among the people.

When Joan was in the hands of the enemy, they worked quickly to criticize her in public. Many thought that she was allied with a higher power. But was it God or the devil?

They couldn’t charge her as a witch because she was a virgin. Those in charge were priests, so they wanted to put Joan in prison for being possessed by the devil. Joan had gained so much support that she was a threat to the whole religious system. This hero needed to be removed.

In court

She made it far in court despite a lot of pressure. They tried to trick her, but she had really good answers. When one of the holy men who spoke with a strong English accent asked her which language was spoken by the voices in her head, Joan answered that they spoke French and did so much better than he did.

Now they really wanted to get rid of her. They threatened to kill her on the spot to scare her into signing a confession of heresy. But they could only punish her with death if it happened more than once. So she was sent to jail for life while the authorities figured out what to do next.

Behind bars

Life in jail wasn’t good for Joan. She protected herself by dressing in men’s clothing. One time, an English lord tried to attack her, and she realized that she needed masculine protection.

The church allowed women to wear men’s clothing sometimes. But the prison guards didn’t agree. King Charles VII, who supported her before, didn’t do so anymore. He thought it could damage him as a king. Joan had no allies left, and on 29 May 1431, she was sentenced to death.

She was executed the next day.

Martyrdom

This god-fearing girl got a terrible end to her life. The people in the town mocked her (some cried), but Joan held herself high. She asked the priest to hold the cross up high so she could see it through the flames.

Joan was burnt three times to make sure that her body was completely destroyed. There were only ashes left, but some claimed that her heart was still beating. Her ashes were thrown in the river so that her followers wouldn’t have anything to go to.

National hero

Joan of Arc became a national hero in France:

The war continued for another almost 25 years after Joan’s death. The alliance between the Burgundians and the French broke down. France was the winner. Charles was crowned king of France in Reims Cathedral, just like Joan wanted.

Today, Joan of Arc is a national hero in France. She had a lot of support from the people. What happened to her was tragic, and when she lived, she was a political target. In 1920 she became a saint. She is a legendary martyr that is still honored today, almost 600 years after her death.

Solid legacy

Joan of Arc has created a lot of interest around the world, especially in the city of Orléans. In Orléans, they have celebrated the end of the attack every year since 1435.

Two bishops from Orléans helped Joan to become a saint. In 1869, Felix Dupanloup (the bishop of Orléans), and eleven other bishops presented her as a candidate for becoming a saint to Pope Pius IX.

The new bishop of Orléans wanted to find out if Joan met the criteria for being a saint in 1876. She did, and the process started. She became a saint in 1920. There was a ceremony in St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican with a lot of people. Her sainthood was celebrated all over the continent, and it was with joy the French president announced the sainthood.

Joan of Arc is celebrated every year on May 30th, the date of her execution. She is remembered by being on coins and is a popular motif in art and sculptures.
