Who was Confucius?

Confucius was a teacher from ancient China who lived more than 2,500 years ago. He wanted people to learn how to live together in a peaceful way.

What is relational ethics in Confucius’ philosophy?

Relational ethics is about how we treat other people. Confucius believed that our actions depend on our relationships.

For example, we act differently with our parents, friends, and teachers. Each relationship is important and requires respect and care. Being a good person means thinking about others and acting in a kind and responsible way.

This helps people live together peacefully.

Example:

Imagine you are talking to your teacher in class. You would probably speak politely, listen carefully, and not interrupt. But with a close friend, you might speak more casually and joke around.

Confucius believed this is important. We should act differently depending on our relationship with others, but always with respect. Acting kindly and respectfully in each situation helps people get along better.

Why do you think it is important to act differently depending on who you are with?

Key concepts: ren, li, and xiao

Confucius taught important ideas about how to behave. Ren means being kind. Li means being polite and respectful. Xiao means respecting your family.

These ideas help us understand how to treat others in everyday life. When we are kind, respectful, and caring, our relationships become stronger.

This helps people live together in a better way.

Imagine this:

You are at home and your parents ask you to help set the table. You might feel like continuing what you are doing, but you decide to help anyway. You say “okay” and do it politely.

This shows xiao (respect for family) and li (polite behavior). Helping without complaining can also show ren (kindness).

  • Can something difficult still be good for your life?

Why are roles and responsibilities important?

Confucius believed that we all have roles in life. For example, we can be children, friends, or students.

Each role has responsibilities. This means we should act in certain ways, like being kind to friends or respectful to teachers. When people do their part, relationships become better.

This helps create a peaceful and respectful environment.

Why is leading by example important?

Confucius believed that people learn by watching others. When someone behaves well, others may copy them.

This means that actions are very important. If you are kind and respectful, people around you may act the same way. You can be a good example for others, even in small situations.

Imagine this…

You are in class and a new student arrives. They seem nervous and don’t know anyone. You decide to say hello, include them in a group activity, and treat them kindly. Other students notice what you do and start acting the same way. Soon, the new student feels more comfortable and included.

What do you think? Can one small action really change how a group behaves? Why?

A junzi is honest, kind, and responsible. They try to make good choices, even when it is hard. Confucius believed that anyone can become a better person by practicing good actions every day.

Example:

Imagine you find something that is not yours. You choose to give it back instead of keeping it. What does it mean to be a good person when no one is watching?

About self-reflection

Confucius believed it is important to think about what we do. This is called self-reflection.

When we reflect, we ask ourselves if we acted in a good way. This helps us learn from mistakes and try to do better next time. It also helps us understand how our actions affect others.

Self-reflection helps us grow and become better people.

Imagine you are playing with a classmate and you say something that hurts their feelings. At that moment, you might not think it is a big problem. You continue playing, but your classmate becomes quiet and stops talking.

Later, when you are alone, you start thinking about what happened. You remember what you said and realize it may have been unkind. You decide to say sorry the next day and try to be more careful with your words.

Do you agree that thinking about your actions helps you be a better friend?

Confucius vs. Kant: Relationships or rules?

Confucius and Kant had different ways of thinking about right and wrong. Confucius believed that we should think about our relationships and be kind and respectful in each situation.

Kant believed that we should follow rules that are always the same, no matter what. He thought doing the right thing means following these rules.

These ideas show two different ways of making decisions.

Imagine a friend asks if you like something they made, but you don’t. You could tell the truth directly or answer in a kind way to avoid hurting them. Would you choose to be honest or to protect someone’s feelings? Why?
