Who was Confucius?

Confucius was a Chinese philosopher who lived more than 2,500 years ago, during a time when society was unstable and full of conflict. He wanted to understand how people could live together in a more peaceful and respectful way. Instead of focusing only on laws or punishments, he believed that change begins with how individuals behave toward others.

Confucius taught that people should act with responsibility, respect, and care in their everyday relationships. He believed that when individuals improve their behavior, society as a whole becomes more stable. His teachings were written down by his students and are still studied today because they offer practical guidance for how to live with others.

Do you think society improves more through rules or through how people treat each other? Why?

What is relational ethics in Confucius’ philosophy?

Relational ethics means that what is right depends on how we treat others in different relationships. Confucius believed that we are always connected to other people, such as family members, friends, teachers, and classmates. Because of this, our actions should take these relationships into account.

He taught that each relationship comes with responsibilities. For example, children should respect their parents, but parents should also care for their children. This means that relationships are not one-sided—both people have a role to play.

Relational ethics helps us understand that being a good person is not just about following rules, but about acting thoughtfully in each situation and considering how our actions affect others.

Example:

Imagine you disagree with your parents about something important. You might feel frustrated and want to argue strongly. However, Confucius would suggest expressing your opinion respectfully, without shouting or being rude. At the same time, parents also have a responsibility to listen and guide you with care.

This example shows relational ethics: both sides have responsibilities, and the goal is to maintain respect and harmony in the relationship. It is not only about being right, but about how you communicate and treat each other.

Do you think it is more important to be right or to maintain a respectful relationship? Why?

Key concepts: ren, li, and xiao

Confucius taught important ideas that help guide how we behave. One of them is ren, which means being kind, caring, and understanding toward others. Another is li, which refers to acting in a respectful and polite way, depending on the situation. It includes things like good manners and appropriate behavior.

He also taught xiao, which means respecting and caring for your family, especially your parents and elders. Confucius believed that family is the first place where we learn how to behave.

These ideas work together. Being kind (ren), respectful (li), and caring toward family (xiao) helps create better relationships and a more peaceful society.

Imagine this situation:

You see a classmate sitting alone during lunch. You are with your group of friends, but you notice they look uncomfortable. You decide to invite them to join you or start a conversation.

This action shows ren because you are being kind and aware of someone else’s feelings. If you approach them politely and respectfully, you are also practicing li. Even though this situation is not about family, these values still guide how we act in relationships.

So, let’s think about this…

Why do you think noticing and responding to others’ feelings is important in everyday situations?

Why are roles and responsibilities important?

Confucius believed that everyone has different roles in life, such as being a student, a friend, or a family member. Each role comes with responsibilities, meaning there are certain ways we are expected to behave.

For example, a student should try to learn and respect their teacher, while a teacher should help and guide students. Confucius believed that when people understand and follow their roles, relationships become stronger and more respectful.

He also believed that responsibilities go both ways. It is not only about following rules, but about caring for others and doing your part in each relationship. This helps create balance and harmony in society.

Which role in your life (student, friend, family member) do you think is most important, and why?

Why is leading by example important?

Confucius believed that people learn by watching others, especially those in positions of responsibility. A good leader should act in a fair, respectful, and honest way so others can follow their example.

Instead of forcing people to behave, Confucius thought it was better to guide them through actions. When someone shows good behavior, others are more likely to copy it. This helps create trust and stronger relationships.

This idea does not only apply to leaders. Teachers, parents, and even friends can influence others through their behavior.

Imagine this…

You are part of a group project, and one person starts working seriously, organizing tasks, and helping others without complaining. At first, the rest of the group might not be as motivated, but over time they begin to follow that example. They start contributing more, communicating better, and taking the work seriously.

This shows how behavior can spread through a group. Do you think people are more likely to follow actions rather than instructions? Why?

What is the “Junzi” (the ideal person)?

Confucius used the idea of the junzi to describe an ideal person. A junzi is someone who tries to do the right thing, even when it is difficult. This person works on improving themselves and thinks about their actions.

The junzi is honest, respectful, and responsible. They do not act well only to impress others, but because they believe it is the right thing to do. Confucius believed that anyone can become this kind of person by learning and practicing good behavior over time.

This idea shows that being a good person is not about being perfect, but about trying to improve and make thoughtful choices.

Imagine you are tempted to cheat on a test, but you decide not to because you know it is wrong, even if no one would notice.

Why do you think it matters to do the right thing even when no one is watching?

About self-reflection

Confucius believed that thinking about your own actions is very important. This is called self-reflection. Instead of only noticing what others do wrong, he encouraged people to look at their own behavior and ask if they are acting in a respectful and responsible way.

Self-reflection helps people learn from their mistakes and improve over time. It also helps us understand how our actions affect others. Confucius believed that becoming a better person is a process that takes effort and honesty.

By reflecting regularly, people can make better choices and build stronger relationships.

Imagine you are working in a group at school and you get frustrated because others are not doing their part. You react by speaking in an impatient or rude way. In the moment, you feel justified because you think the problem is only the others.

Later, you take time to reflect on the situation. You realize that, although others may not have done their part, your reaction also affected the group. You begin to understand that how you communicate matters just as much as what you say. The next time, you decide to express your concerns more calmly and respectfully, which helps the group work better together.

  • Why is it important to reflect not only on what happened, but also on how you reacted?

Why is relational ethics important today?

Relational ethics is still important today because we are always interacting with other people. Confucius’ ideas help us think about how our actions affect those around us, both in real life and in the online world.

Today, communication is often fast, and people may react without thinking. Confucius reminds us to slow down, be respectful, and consider others before acting. His ideas also show that improving our behavior can improve our relationships.

By focusing on respect, responsibility, and care, we can create better environments at school, at home, and in society.

Let’s reflect on this:

Do you think people behave differently online than in real life? How could relational ethics help?

Confucius vs. Kant: Relationships or rules?

Confucius and Kant had different ideas about how to decide what is right. Confucius believed that our actions should depend on our relationships and the situation. He thought it is important to be respectful, thoughtful, and consider how our actions affect others.

Kant, on the other hand, believed that there are clear rules that everyone should follow, no matter the situation. He thought that we should always do what is morally right, even if it is difficult. For him, being fair and consistent is very important.

Both ideas help us think about ethics in different ways—one focuses on relationships, and the other on rules.

If a friend asks for your opinion and you think something is not good, Confucius might suggest answering gently to protect the relationship, while Kant would say you should tell the truth clearly.

Is it better to always follow the same rules, or to think about each situation differently?
