English is the third most spoken first language in the world, but is also used by many as a second language. But how has English become so widespread that we can call it a world language?
The spread of English
English is spoken in many parts of the world. Some countries have English as an official language, for example the UK, Ireland, the US, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, India, and South Africa.
About 402 million people speak English as their first language. Between 350 million and a billion people use English as a second language. In Norway, we use English as a second language.
Which other languages can be world languages?
Lingua franca
Lingua Franca is a term for a language that people use when they don’t have the same first language.
One example can be if you as a Norwegian are going to talk to a person from Germany. Neither of you knows the other’s language, so you must find a language that you both know, for example, English.
