What do you dream of becoming? An astronaut? A football player? A chef? Do you want to earn the most possible money, or do you want to do something good for other people?

There are an incredible number of different professions, and you need to choose one of them. Or maybe you want to try many different jobs? Regardless of what you choose, you will be spending many years in the workforce. This means that it is important that you enjoy your job!

It is your choice, but seek some advice from someone who has some experience. Those closest to you are your family.

In the footsteps of your parents

Although Sami culture has changed in recent decades, it is still important that children and young people continue the old traditions. Without this, the Sami culture will eventually disappear.

Therefore, many Sami families focus on ensuring that their children are raised according to Sami traditions. They are taught to use knives, look after reindeer and educated on how to look after nature properly. It is part of their upbringing that children should follow in their parents’ footsteps. Environment and heritage have a great influence on the choices children make when they grow up.

Elsewhere in Norway, parents don’t necessarily have the same influence on their children’s choice of career. There is often more freedom to become what you want.
