National Day in the US

The American national day, Independence Day, is on July 4th. They celebrate being free from Great Britain, which happened in 1776. Thirteen North American states broke loose, and the Declaration of Independence was passed. This declaration was important for other countries as well, for example France in 1791 and Norway in 1814.

Family parties, parades and fireworks

There is a big party on the Fourth of July. Friends and family are together and eat a lot of food, often barbecue. There are parades in several places with speeches. At the end of the celebration, there are fantastic fireworks. It is common to decorate with balloons and other decorations in red, white and blue. The day is also celebrated in other countries where Americans live.

La Tomatina – The tomato throwing festival

La Tomatina is a yearly festival in the town of Buñol in the Valencia region of Spain. It is celebrated each year on the last Wednesday of August. Those who take part throw tomatoes at each other in a big fight. The tradition started in 1945 when a man got angry because someone destroyed a figure of his during a parade. He threw things around and others joined. They robbed vegetable stands and started to throw tomatoes at each other.

Strict safety rules

La Tomatina is just for fun. There is no special purpose behind it. Tons of tomatoes are thrown at the festival, and participants throw tomatoes at anyone they want. But they have rules they need to follow so no one gets hurt.
