The Sun Began to Set on the British Empire

When Elizabeth II was born the British Empire was the largest in the world. In the 1920s, the empire included a third of the world’s land and a quarter of the world’s population. Because the Empire was spread all over the world there was a saying that the sun never set on the British Empire. After two world wars, the empire was coming to an end.

The Commonwealth of Nations

When the British Empire collapsed, 54 countries joined what was called the Commonwealth of Nations. Queen Elizabeth II became the leader of the Commonwealth. In 2022 became Gabon and Togo new members of the Commonwealth.

Being head of the Commonwealth Nations is not a position you can inherit. The heads of state of the member countries elected Elizabeth.  Even if there were different opinions in the population of the Commonwealth, Elizabeth was met with respect.

The Cold War

During the Second World War, the US, Great Britain and the Soviet Union stood together against Germany, Italy and Japan. The three countries wanted to be as big as the British empire but lost the bloodiest war in history. After the war, the Soviet Union became an enemy of the US and Great Britain, and it was East against West. They fought against each other to spread their political systems. The ending of the Soviet Union in 1991 marked the end of the Cold War.

The Moon Landing

Airliners were not available for most people, but space was already being explored. The competition to send man to the Moon, also called The Space Race, quickly became part of the Cold War.

The first manned spacecraft landed on the Moon in 1969, and the Americans Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin took the first steps on the Moon.

Thatcher’s Revolution

During Queen Elizabeth II’s rule, she appointed 15 prime ministers. Britain’s first female prime minister, Margaret Thatcher, was called “The Iron Lady” based on her leadership style.

Britain’s economy became better, but Thatcher got much of the blame for the unemployment, social problems and political issues with the EU and other countries. The relationship between the Queen and the Prime Minister is described as professional and formal.

The Falklands War

The Falklands War was a military conflict over the Falkland Islands between Great Britain and Argentina. Argentina had claimed the islands since 1816, but Britain banned the Argentines in 1833. Argentina occupied the islands in 1982 but had to surrender to the British 74 days later. The islands are still under British rule, but with a sort of self-ruling.

The Women’s Rights Movement

Queen Elizabeth II was a leader and the mother of young children in a world where most women didn’t have the same opportunities as men in education or jobs. Women also often had to be silent in political gatherings.

Today, there have been big changes. Many women have more opportunities, but there is still a long way to go in some countries. Queen Elizabeth II has been an important symbol in the fight for women’s rights.

A Wave of Terrorism

There has been a rise in terrorist attacks in newer times. This began in 1972 when 17 people were killed during the Munich Olympics. Terrorists from the Black September group killed Israeli athletes because of the war between Israel and Palestine. Other attacks are the plane attacks on the World Trade Center in the US, mass murder on Utøya, bomb attacks on the London underground and several more.

Brexit

Brexit (from “Britain” and “exit”) is a name for the process that led the United Kingdom out of the European Union in 2020. The country had been a member since 1973. It started with voting to leave the EU in 2016. The United Kingdom left the EU on January 31, 2020. The UK left a union it had been a part of creating. It was a difficult path, and many politicians have been mocked through this process.

Technological Development

During the Queen’s lifetime, technological development moved forward. From house phones to smartphones in your pocket. From black and white TV to streaming services. From paper newspapers to social media.

Queen Elizabeth II changed the way the royals reached out to people. She was on the radio for the first time in 1940, only 14 years old. Her crowning ceremony in 1953 was the first to air on TV. Just in the UK, 27 million people watched the ceremony.

The Queen made her first television program in 1957. The broadcast was sent from Sandringham House. This was a historic event because it was the first time people could see and hear her “at home” through the TV.

In 1976 the Queen sent her first email. The Royal House got its first official website in 1997. The first royal Twitter message was sent in 2014, and the first Instagram post was published in 2019.
