A Century of Transformation

Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom lived for 96 years. She reigned as queen for 70 of these years. During her long life, the world experienced enormous changes.

When Elizabeth was born in 1926, not many could have imagined what the world would come to look like. Reality outdid most dreams and fantasies. We’ve landed on the moon, created nuclear bombs that can wipe out the whole planet, and we have the whole world in our pockets through our smartphones.

We can now look back on a century in which the world has gone through big changes. Here are some of the changes the Queen both took part in and witnessed.

The Sun Began to Set on the British Empire

Elizabeth II was born when the British Empire was the largest in the world. In the 1920s, the empire included a quarter of the world’s population, and it covered a third of the world’s total land area. Because it was so widespread, it was said that the sun never set on the British Empire. After two world wars, the British Empire was slowly but surely coming to an end.

The Commonwealth of Nations

After the breakdown of the British Empire, most British colonies became free, but 54 countries joined what was called the Commonwealth of Nations. Queen Elizabeth II became the head of this Commonwealth, which included states with very different histories, economies and cultures. In 2022 became Gabon and Togo new members of the Commonwealth.

The role of head is not inherited. Elizabeth was elected by the heads of state of the member states – which shows that she was wanted, despite different opinions among the populations of the member states. All in all, the Queen was met with respect.

The Cold War

During the Second World War, the great powers of the US, Great Britain and the Soviet Union stood together against the empires of Germany, Italy and Japan. The three countries wanted to match the British Empire, but lost the bloodiest war in history. Imperialism as a world order suffered a serious setback. After the war, the Soviet Union became a bitter enemy of its former allies. A cold iron blanket spread across Europe, and it was East against West. Soviet communism and Western capitalism fought each other to spread their respective political systems. The end of the Soviet Union in 1991 marked the end of the Cold War.

The Moon Landing

While airliners were still not available to the majority of the Earth’s population, space was already being explored. The competition to send man to the Moon, also called The Space Race, quickly became part of the Cold War.

In 1969, the first manned spacecraft landed on the Moon, and the Americans Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin took the first steps on the Moon.

Thatcher’s Revolution

Queen Elizabeth II appointed 15 prime ministers during her reign. When Margaret Thatcher was appointed Britain’s first female prime minister, Margaret Thatcher, a political tsunami started. Thatcher’s leadership style earned her the nickname “The Iron Lady”, and with her as a leader, Britain experienced economic growth. Even so, Thatcher got much of the blame for record unemployment, major social problems and political conflict with the EU and other countries, especially Germany. The relationship between the Queen and the Prime Minister is described as professional, formal and stiff.

The Falklands War

The Falklands War was a military conflict over the Falkland Islands between Great Britain and Argentina. Argentina had claimed the islands since 1816, but British forces banned the Argentines in 1833. Argentina occupied the islands on April 2, 1982, but had to surrender to the British 74 days later. Since then, the islands have been under British rule, but have a sort of self-government. Argentina has never recognized British control here.

The Women’s Rights Movement

Queen Elizabeth II was a female leader and the mother of young children at a time when most women in the world had few opportunities to get an education, get a job or be taken seriously in political debates. Women also often had to be silent in political gatherings.

The women’s movement has led to big changes, and has given many people the opportunity to live as they wish, but there is still a long way to go in many countries. Therefore Queen Elizabeth II – as female regent for 70 years – has been an important symbol in the fight for women’s rights.

A Wave of Terrorism

In newer times, the world has experienced a rise in extremism and terrorism. The start of this wave was when 17 people were killed during the Munich Olympics in 1972. Terrorists from the Black September group killed Israeli athletes as a reaction to the war between Israel and Palestine. After that, we experienced terror in the US when the World Trade Center was attacked with two hijacked passenger planes, mass murder on Utøya, bomb attacks on the London underground and a long series of other terrorist acts.

Brexit

Brexit (from “Britain” and “exit”) is a name for the process that led the United Kingdom out of the European Union in 2020. The country had been a member since 1973. The process began with voting on the departure in 2016, and after several delays, the United Kingdom left the EU on January 31, 2020. There was a political earthquake when it became known that Great Britain wanted out of the union it had helped create. Political parties, prime ministers and others have gone through long and hard battles to get their vision through. It has caused deep wounds, and many politicians have been mocked through this process.

Technological Development

During the Queen’s lifetime, technological developments evolved. From house phones to smartphones in your pocket. From black and white TV to streaming services. From paper newspapers to social media.

Queen Elizabeth II changed the way the royals communicated with the people. She made her first public radio broadcast in 1940. She was only 14 years old. Her own crowning ceremony in 1953 was the first to be televised. The sale of TVs skyrocketed. In the UK alone, 27 million people watched the ceremony.

The Queen made her first personal television broadcast in 1957. The broadcast was sent from Sandringham House. This was a historic event because it was the first time people could see her “at home” and hear her speak through what she called “the new medium of television”.

Queen Elizabeth sent her first email as early as in 1976. It went to the Minister of Defence. The Royal House got its first official website in 1997. The first royal Twitter message was sent in 2014, and the first Instagram post was published in 2019.
